Finding a Child Therapist in New Castle County, DE: Newark, Wilmington & Middletown

A practical guide for New Castle County parents on finding the right child therapist — how to choose for fit, where we see families across Newark, Wilmington, and Middletown, and how insurance works.
New Castle County has no shortage of therapists — which can make choosing one feel harder, not easier. If you're a parent in the Newark–Wilmington–Middletown corridor trying to find the right person for your child, the goal isn't to sort through every name. It's to narrow quickly to a good fit, close to home. Here's how to do that.
Start with fit, not just the map
The most useful first question isn't "who's nearby?" — it's "who's right for what my child is actually facing?" A therapist who's wonderful with an anxious grade-schooler may not be the best match for a teen working through trauma, or a younger child whose ADHD is turning school into a daily struggle. For little ones especially, ask whether a practice uses play therapy, since that's how young children actually process what's going on. Location matters — but fit for the problem matters more.
Where we see New Castle County families
At The Center for Child Development, we work with children, teens, and families across all of New Castle County — in person and by secure telehealth. Here's where we're based and the areas each location serves:
- Newark — our home office, convenient to Newark, Bear, Glasgow, and the University of Delaware area.
- Wilmington — serving the city and northern New Castle County, including Hockessin and the surrounding suburbs.
- Middletown — supporting families across the fast-growing MOT (Middletown–Odessa–Townsend) area and southern New Castle County.
Wherever you are in the county, you also have two options that don't depend on a drive at all:
- Telehealth across Delaware. Secure video sessions mean your child can be seen from home — helpful for busy families, tight schedules, or kids who open up more in their own space.
- School-based services. We provide therapy right inside a number of New Castle County schools, so some kids can get support during the school day without you leaving work for an appointment.
Does insurance cover it?
For most New Castle County families, cost is less of a barrier than they expect. We accept Delaware Medicaid plans as well as commercial plans like Aetna and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware — and for many families with these plans, therapy costs little or nothing out of pocket. We go through exactly what's covered, and the questions worth asking your plan, on our guide to insurance coverage, or you can see the current list of accepted plans on our Insurance & Medicaid page.
How to start
You don't need to have it all figured out before you call. A good first conversation is partly about your child and partly about logistics — what's going on, which location or telehealth makes sense, and whether we're in-network for your plan. We'll help you sort it out.
